PHOENIX — It was graduation day for a total of 200 Desert Schools Federal Credit Union employees who earned nearly 300 degrees as part of Desert Schools' Virtual University.

The program is designed to give employees the opportunity to attend training and participate in online courses to help them become more successful in their jobs.

The Desert Schools' degrees awarded to the Class of 2006 range from branch operations, technology and personal growth, to compliance, financial services and leadership.

“Although the training department has been part of the credit union for many years, Desert Schools Virtual University has been around for six years,” said Matt Osborn, director of training for Desert Schools. “Initially, employees had five degree tracks to choose from. We held our first commencement ceremony in 2001 where 96 degrees were awarded. Today, as our credit union grows, so does Desert Schools Virtual University.” Taking virtual education to the next level, Osborn adds that employees are honored with a commencement ceremony and fun events. The Class of 2006 festivities took place at the Phoenix Zoo during Zoo Lights, an annual promotion where holiday lights and special activities are planned. Plans are underway to modify core classes, provide richer online content and give students the ability to earn a real-world Associates Degree from a local community college via Desert Schools Virtual University.
