DEARBORN, Mich. – With some help from two large area credit unions here, Dearborn Village Community Credit Union will be able to open a branch to serve a lower income neighborhood in early June 2006. According to Dearborn Village Community CU President/CEO Terry Denmark, there are no other financial institutions serving the ethnically diverse community. "Area residents have to deal with check-cashing services or pay-day lenders, or travel outside their community for financial services. There's no question we're filling a need," said Denmark. Pitching in to help get the branch off the ground are Livonia-based Co-op Services Credit Union, which is donating or providing at minimal cost such essentials as office furniture, security equipment and a quality phone system; and Bloomfield Hills-based T&C Federal Credit Union, which is sharing its business plan for branch openings and selling a lobby ATM at a discounted price. "We're grateful for their assistance," said Denmark. "I guess you could call this a textbook example of how credit unions are different from other financial institutions. You would never see two large banks reaching out to help a smaller competitor serve an underserved community." The credit union is also working on producing service brochures printed in English and Arabic, as well as English and Spanish, to attract new members at the branch.
