On Feb. 14 the Michigan CU League Board reaffirmed its support for the current policy regarding credit union bank charter conversions. The MCUL policy encourages MCUL to actively encourage credit union members to make a well-informed decision on conversion votes. The policy also authorizes management to work with lawmakers and regulators to assure that a fair, consumer-friendly process is in place for conversions. In recent editions of Credit Union Times, various perspectives have been shared regarding MCUL's policy regarding conversions and the differences of opinions among member credit unions regarding this policy. The board adopted this policy based on significant member input. The board's strong support for this policy continues based on a polling of MCUL members that shows support for the policy by over 80% of members polled. The league certainly does not have unanimous support from members regarding this policy. However, on any difficult issue, unanimous support is an unrealistic expectation. I recently asked our CEOs for feedback on the policy. I received 67 e-mails of which, 59 (88%) were largely supportive of it. On such a controversial issue, this is a strong statement of unity. This is the reason for the board's unwavering support for its present conversion policy. Again, I do not suggest that there aren't dissenting viewpoints. There are, and these will always be welcome and important for arriving at a proper policy position. Many in our Michigan credit union movement would be far more critical of the league if we were not actively involved on the conversion issue. To do nothing is always the easiest course. The league has sought to develop and implement a member-driven policy to address an appropriate role focused on legislative/regulatory lobbying and consumer education. The vast majority of our membership supports this approach. We regret that we may lose some credit unions to disaffiliation and see others write scathing letters of protest. But leadership in difficult times is fraught with these challenges. Strong associations are most valuable to their members in challenging times. Our industry can't afford passive leadership on difficult issues. My hope is that as we all deal with this complex and challenging issue we realize that division is exactly what the bankers are striving for. I hope that as an industry we can continue to unite against a common enemy rather than losing our greatest strength of unity due to the splintering effect of discord. I'm proud of Michigan credit unions for their support and unity in the face of such challenging times. I hope that this gets projected nationally and not just in Michigan. We wish the same for each state league as they deal with similar challenges within their borders. Dave Adams CEO Michigan CU League Plymouth, Mich.
