As a result of Hurricane Harvey, CUNA and the Cornerstone Credit Union League have launched an online community on which credit unions and system friends can connect and offer assistance when disasters strike.

Through the community, which can be accessed here, organizations across the country can match services and resources with needs identified by credit unions. The community also offers a discussion board that allows people to share ideas and experiences.

"The past two weeks have provided me with reinvigorated hope in mankind and in our credit union system despite some incredibly dark and difficult times in Southeast Texas," said Cornerstone Credit Union League president/CEO Caroline Willard.

She added that recovery from the hurricane and floods will take quite some time.

"Credit unions are better together, as our collective efforts and financial support have shown in recent days," said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. "

While the National Credit Union Foundation's online disaster relief system, CUAid, has raised more than $1 million in less than a week, previous disasters have shown that credit unions need logistical help in such areas as mobile ATMs;  mobile branches, generators, phone, laptops, operational assistance and temporary relocation, CUNA and league officials said.

Credit unions may visit the community and provide details of their needs or resources in a simple form, or call 800-356-9655 for assistance.
