To celebrate the Fourth of July as well as observe its 65th birthday, Power Financial Credit Union will have its cake and eat it too. And so will 6,500 people if the Pembroke Pines, Fla.-based cooperative breaks the Guinness World Record for creating the largest marble cake.
Power Financial employees will assist employees from Vicky Bakery, South Florida’s largest family-owned Cuban bakery chain, to make 65 sheet cakes that will weigh more than 470 pounds when assembled.
That’s a big enough cake to serve 6,500 slices to a huge crowd of people, who are expected to attend the Pembroke Pines Independence Day & Fireworks Show on Monday.
“We were looking for something a little bit different to celebrate the Fourth, get some publicity and celebrate our 65th anniversary,” Power Financial President/CEO Allan M. Prindle (pictured) said. “We thought this was kind of neat.”
The current record for the world’s largest marble cake is 440 pounds and 14 ounces.
“We’re guessing with the 65 sheet cakes, we should achieve 470 or 472 pounds,” he said. “That’s the attempt. It is quite a challenge, but we are going to band together to get these sheet cakes assembled and weighed.”
The cake, which will be made on fifteen eight-foot tables, is expected to be about 40 feet long.
An industrial scale will weigh the cake so that it can be officially recorded and documented to be officially declared as a new Guinness World Record.
The making of the cake will begin around noon and should be completed by 6 p.m.
“What’s more American than making a huge cake?” Prindle asked. “We’re just going to celebrate our independence, eat marble cake and have fun.”
The credit union is sponsoring the Pembroke Pines 4th of July event that also will include a food truck roundup, a special children’s area with free rides, live music and a fireworks show.
Founded in 1951 to serve employees of the Florida Power and Light Co. and their families, Power Financial manages $574 million in assets, operates five branches and serves more than 33,000 members.
