UnitedHealthcare, the nation's largest insurer, did not get topmarks from consumers for its core product: Healthinsurance.

According to the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, fiveof UnitedHealthcare's major rivals - Humana,Kaiser Permanente, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem and Aetna – wereranked higher by their customers, although United's score of 66 wasonly a tad lower than Humana and Kaiser's top score of 71.

The only company that truly came out looking bad was Cigna, which came in last place with a score of 60. Perhaps the silverlining for Cigna was its pending merger with top-performing Anthem.

But according to a new report from J.D. Power, a market researchfirm, UnitedHealthcare's vision and dental plans had the mostsatisfied customers.

On a 1,000 point scale, UnitedHealthcare's vision plan scored729, ahead of second-place EyePlan, which scored 712. The company'sdental plans scored 754, followed by DentaQuest, which scored 736.It was the second year in a row that the carrier's dental plansreceived first place in the J.D. Power survey.

In a statement, the company attributed its high marks fromcustomers to its investments in new mobile technology that helps memberslocate nearby providers on their smart phones. Philip Kaufman, president of the company's specialty benefits division, framed theranking as evidence that the company's enormous size did notprevent it from tailoring its benefits to match needs specific tocertain areas.

“Every employer and community we serve has unique health careneeds, so that requires a commitment from our entire organizationto deliver superior service,” he said. “UnitedHealthcare'slocal-market focus and national resources enable us to meet theoral and visual health needs and enhance the well-being of the morethan 20 million people enrolled in our vision and dental plans.”

The J.D. Power reports displayed a greater divide between dentalplans than vision plans, largely because most vision plans weregrouped together at lower scores, on average. The lowest performingvision carrier was Davis Vision, which scored 698. Cigna, thelowest-scoring health carrier according to the ASCI, also had theworst-ranked dental plan according to J.D Power, coming in at701.

The report showed that most customers do not feel particularlyloyal to their dental or vision carrier, with only 40% of visionbeneficiaries saying they will definitely pick their currentinsurer in the future and only 43% of dental plan members sayingthey were committed to their current carrier.
