The $60 million Palmetto Health Credit Union said it has temporarily blocked debit card transactions in Florida as well as at gas stations in Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio.

The Columbia, S.C.-based credit union took the step after having taken thousands of dollars in losses in just a couple of days, according to Palmetto Health CU President/CEO Hansel Hart.

“Our debit manager and I had a talk about it earlier today and we just decided a temporary block was what we needed to do,” Hart said.

The move will only block debit transactions authorized with a signature. Debit transactions that use a PIN will still work, Hart explained.

If Palmetto Health members expect to travel into Florida and knew they would need to sign for debit card transactions, they could call the credit union to have their card exempted from the block, he added.
