Aggieland Credit Union, Byran, Texas, presented Hannah Trejo with a $1,000 scholarship to attend Texas A&M University for the fall semester. Trejo is a recent Bryan High School graduate and the scholarship will go towards her college tuition and furthering her education. Aggieland Credit Union awards a $1,000 scholarship each year to a Bryan High School graduate who chooses to attend Texas A&M University.
Belvoir Federal Credit Union, Woodbridge, Va., and GEICO partnered in 2012 to award $4,000 in scholarships to a graduating high school senior and a continuing education student. Applicants were asked to answer three questions asking why someone would choose to conduct their finances at a credit union over a bank, how the financial assistance would aid them in attaining their goals and what products/services they would improve from Belvoir Federal's current product line. The recipients of the 2012 Belvoir Federal/GEICO scholarships were Brittney Canada and Jamie Chichester. Canada, a graduating high school senior, plans to attend Virginia State University, where she will pursue a degree in child psychology. Chichester, a continuing education student, is attending Virginia Commonwealth University to pursue a career in biomedical engineering.
Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Bethpage, N.Y., announced 10 recipients of its 2012 Bethpage Federal Credit Union Foundation scholarship program. Each year, Bethpage awards 10 scholarships for $1,000 each to graduating high school seniors who will be attending an accredited two-year or four-year college the following fall, and who also exemplify a well-rounded high school career. Applicants needed to prepare a cover letter describing what they hoped to achieve while in college, submit an essay addressing a turning point or most important moment in their lives to date, and illustrate their community involvement and/or work or internship experience. Applicants also needed to have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA.

CAP COM Federal Credit Union, Albany, N.Y., recently awarded $45,000 to 18 Capital Region students and credit union members. The CAP COM Cares Foundation named 15 winners of the annual Weidner Davis Scholarships and three winners of the Harold Horning Scholarships. Winners of both scholarships were each given a $2,500 award to help pay for college. The Davis Scholarship is named after a former, longtime board member. and the Horning Scholarship honors a current member of the board and past president/CEO of CAP COM.
First Ohio Community Federal Credit Union, North Canton, Ohio, recently awarded two scholarships to First Ohio graduating high school seniors. The scholarships were designed to help students in their first year of college. The scholarship is restricted to high school graduating seniors, who are also members of the credit union. First Ohio awarded two $250 scholarships to Anne Flahery and Samantha Miller, based on an application and written essay.
Members Advantage Credit Union, Michigan City, Ind., awarded two $1,000 scholarships to local students. Both winners received their scholarships based on scholastic excellence, personal integrity, active participation in their schools and contributions to their community. The Leona Bruno Scholarship was given to Shubhra Murarka, a graduating senior at La Lumiere School in LaPorte. The Leona Bruno Scholarship was awarded in memory of the first manager of Members Advantage Credit Union. Murarka is planning to enter the University of Chicago in the fall with a double major of English and neuroscience. She aspires to become a doctor or professor.
The Gail Walker scholarship was given to Benjamin Burnett, a sophomore at Valparaiso University. The Gail Walker Scholarship was created in 2010 in memory of a former board member. Burnett is double majoring at Valparaiso University in economics and Spanish. He plans to attend medical school or go to graduate school for economics. Burnett is enrolled in Valparaiso University's honor college, Christ College.
Norristown Bell Credit Union, Blue Bell, Pa., awarded its annual scholarship award to Edward Barron, a graduate of Salesianum School. Barron will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall, where he will be a part of the University Honors College. He is an Eagle Scout and is currently serving as the leader of all the scouts. Barron participates in several school club sports and is a member of both the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society.
Southern Mass Credit Union, Fairhaven, Mass., recently presented its 2012 annual scholarship awards to three credit union members entering college as freshmen this fall. Each recipient received a $1,000 scholarship. This is the 21st consecutive year SMCU has awarded college scholarships. The recipients were: Meghan Dorian, attending Wheaton College, where she will study liberal arts; Matthieu Oliveira, attending Fashion Institute of Technology, where he will study commercial photography; and Cody Santos, attending UMass Dartmouth to study mechanical engineering.
Tower Federal Credit Union in Laurel, Md., awarded member Kathleen Hupfeld a $1,000 scholarship during a presentation at the credit union's Clarksville, Md., branch. Hupfeld was one of four young Tower members who won the award from the annual essay-based scholarship awards program. Hupfeld will attend Elon University in North Carolina in the fall and plans to major in biology/pre-med. Four of the 12 $1,000 scholarship recipients were Tower members. The question for this year's essay contest asked: "How can your credit union help you and others of college age during this current economic slump?" The scholarship awards program is funded by donors of the credit union foundation of Maryland and D.C. Over the last six years, 18 Tower members have received scholarships from the foundation.
Xceed Financial Credit Union, El Segundo, Calif., presented 10 high school seniors from across the country with $1,000 college scholarships. The scholarships honor the late Romeo Doty, the credit union's longest-tenured board member, who believed in making higher education accessible for all students. Applicants were evaluated on their academic records, contributions and extracurricular activities in their schools and communities. All are members of Xceed and submitted essays describing ideas that credit unions can implement to spur economic growth and change.
