Credit unions in some parts of the country may be seeing the numbers of their credit card holders 60 days late on their payments significantly decline while in other areas the numbers of borrowers 60 days late with mortgage payments increase significantly.
Experian, one of the three national credit bureaus reported that, nationwide, 20% fewer consumers are 60 days late on their credit card payment than in 2007 but that 25% more home owners are 60 days late in their mortgage payments than in 2007.
“In looking at the numbers, we're seeing that even in the cities at the bottom of the list, consumers are meeting their bankcard payment obligations better than before the recession,” said Michele Raneri, an Experian vice president of analytics.
“While the Experian data show an overall improvement to these 60-day delinquencies, as much as a 30% improvement is seen in the key Texas cities, which is a positive sign in what has been a slow economic recovery,” Raneri said.
The metropolitan areas that the credit bureau reported led the way in improved credit card delinquencies were Cleveland, San Antonio, Cincinnati, Texas; Cincinnati, Dallas and Houston.
Metropolitan areas where the numbers of missed mortgage payments increased the most include Portland, Ore., Phoenix, Baltimore, Seattle, New York and Washington, D.C.
