Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., presented one college-bound high school senior, Omar Ali, with the Richard A. Romano Scholarship, and three college-bound high school seniors, Yohan Perera, Anneliese Janssen and Jasmine Haugh, with the Affinity Scholarship. All of the winners are incoming freshmen for the fall of 2010.
Black Hills Federal Credit Union, Rapid City, S.D., announced the winners of the 2010 VIBZ! Scholarship program. Four applicants selected from 18 area schools will receive $1,000 toward their college tuition. The recipients were each enrolled in the credit union's teen program, which focuses on promoting financial literacy among youth. This year's winners are Michael McNally, Lauren Lund, Jon Nabholz and Warlance Minor.
Credit Union Association of New York, Albany, N.Y., awarded five $1,000 and fifteen $500 scholarships to college bound seniors who are active members in 12 of the organization's 14 chapters. This year 96 credit unions participated in the association's program, submitting a total of 1,593 applications. The winners were decided based on a grading system devised by the credit association in which the student's academic transcript and SAT/ACT scores are considered along with extracurricular activities.

Credit Union of Georgia, Kennesaw, Ga., donated scholarship money for the Kennesaw State University Staff Senate. Staff Senate is an organization that promotes cohesiveness among the KSU employees and students. The Staff Senate at KSU hosts various school events throughout the year that boost morale and school pride at Kennesaw State. The Staff Senate Annual Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to full-time staff members of Kennesaw State University who are enrolled in the University System of Georgia's Tuition Assistance Program. This year, Credit Union of Georgia awarded $200 to scholarship recipient winner, McCree Lake. The scholarship will provide assistance in the form of textbook purchases or any other educational expenses as approved under the guidelines established by the University System of Georgia.
Illinois Credit Union Foundation, Naperville, Ill., recently awarded $17,709 in small credit union development, community service, marketing and business development, and financial independence and revitalization effort grants, as well as $10,768 in scholarships, bringing the total awarded for the year to nearly $73,000.
Insight Financial Credit Union, Orlando, Fla., held its annual meeting to announce the four winners of the Paul H. Higgs Memorial scholarship. The recipients, Andrew Bauschilcher, Abigail Cain, Shedric Hobbs and Brandon Porter, each submitted essays describing the importance of being able to manage finances at a young age. The scholarship fund was established to honor Insight's former chairman who served the credit union for 28 years.
National Credit Union Foundation, Madison, Wis., awarded scholarships to help professionals attend the credit union development education programs at the National Youth Involvement Board's 2010 Annual Conference. During the conference, awards will also be given for the titles of outstanding delegate and volunteer of the year.
Northwest Community Credit Union, Springfield, Ore., just granted 10 $1,000 scholarships this year. The program awards scholarships twice each year, in January and September. Successful applicants are eligible for $1,000 if they are full-time students and $500 if they attend school part time. The program is open to credit union members and nonmembers, with focus on need and people who do not qualify for most traditional scholarships. Candidates must be Oregon residents for at least two years and have a 2.5 grade point average, demonstrate service to the community and membership in the credit union, which they can join.
OMNI Community Credit Union, Battle Creek Mich., will award $1,000 scholarships to five graduating high school seniors. The program has been helping the credit union's younger members fund their college tuitions for four consecutive years.
Oregon State College Federal Credit Union, Corvallis, Ore., completed the 12th consecutive year of its annual "Tomorrow's Leaders Today" college scholarship program, awarding 15 high school seniors $1,000 toward their college educations. Since the program's inception, the credit union has provided more than $100,000 for its teen members throughout Benton, Lincoln, Linn, Marion and Polk counties.
People's Trust Federal Credit Union, Houston, through the People's Trust Foundation, announced the five winners of the 2010 Betty L. Bukowski Financial Literacy Scholarship. The scholarship began three years ago and was renamed to honor the former chair of the People's Trust board of directors, Betty L. Bukowski, who passed away earlier this year. Winners were selected from a pool of applicants based on their GPAs, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities and recommendations from community leaders.
United Services Credit Union, Asheville, N.C., continued its tradition of granting college scholarships at the credit union's 54th annual membership meeting. The presentation of four $750 scholarship awards marked the credit union's third annual scholarship program. Awards were based on merit and recipients were chosen by a committee of volunteer USCU employees.
Vantage Credit Union, St. Louis, board members, including President/CEO Hubert Hoosman Jr., travelled to local high schools to dispense $20,000 in scholarships among 20 graduates. The Quest for Education scholarships, which have been awarded for the past 26 years, have provided eastern Missouri high school graduates with more than $512,500 toward the pursuit of higher education. The credit union staff oversees the scholarship program and provides the judges who determine the contest winners.
