The "Triad Flight of Honor" which recognizes World War II veterans by providing them day trips to Washington is taking on a credit union mantra next week as a second North Carolina CU provides financing and a guide to participants.
Making the D.C. trip on Tuesday to visit the World War II Memorial is Barbara Tucker, director of training at the $300 million Members CU of Winston-Salem. She will board the plane in Greensboro and serve as caretaker/guide for three war vets ages 87 to 96
The 'Flights of Honor' have become a "North Carolina phenomenon," as one CU executive put it.

More than half a dozen of the D.C. flights have emanated from cities in the state.
The $60 million Winston-Salem City Employees CU last October sent its chief financial officer, Don Wolford, on a similar flight shepherding aged vets as part of a tribute to his late father, a U.S. Marine. "Triad Flights" have already been held or are planned in 2010 out of Hendersonville, Asheville, Wilmington, Charlotte and Raleigh.
Tucker, active in "support the troops" units greeting returning soldiers, said she is making her Members pilgrimage as a Triad volunteer in a gesture to her son, a U.S. Air Force who recently returned from Kuwait.
"I am not looking for any publicity but I think we in the credit union movement should do all we can to honor those who are serving us," she said.
