Teachers will have some extra cash to help their students thanks to $23,037 in grants from SELCO Community Credit Union. The $846 million credit union has awarded 95 grants of up to $250 each to help teachers supplement funding to K-12 classrooms. The grants focused on building a number of academic skills, including reading, math, science, history and environmental studies, according to SELCO in Eugene, Ore. Educators were encouraged to apply beginning in early September through the Oct. 9 deadline. The grants were awarded in November to educators who submitted lesson plans or projects during this period through SELCO's online application process. The entries were evaluated for their educational impact, responsible use of funds, and number of students who would benefit from the project. This is SELCO's 16th year awarding the grants, originally as a response to local school budget cuts, the CU said.
