Reflective of the push to cut conference and travel expense, three East Coast leagues disclosed that they are considering a joint annual conference in 2011 shedding stand-alone conventions.
The board of the Credit Union Association of New York has already approved the concept of a tri-league convention with the New Jersey Credit Union League and the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association also studying the proposal put forward among league CEOs last August.
"Our members are working hard at cutting costs in this kind of economy and it is only natural and logical that we do the same," said William Mellin, president/CEO of CUANY.
The details on contracting a hotel site to handle the joint meeting and on the city rotation schedule are yet to be worked out but discussions are moving forward, league officials said. A plan to start in 2010 was considered, but was complicated by hotel contracts.
A spokesman for PCUA said the idea for scrapping individual conventions came up when both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania groups found they were meeting in Atlantic City in 2010. The New Jersey league is holding its annual convention this week in Atlantic City while the Pennsylvania held its 2009 conference last May in Hershey.
In a Mid-Continent first, two other leagues in Missouri and Oklahoma are holding a joint fall management conference this week in the Missouri Ozarks.
