To help identify risks and trends in the financial markets, the SEC has created a new division to stay on top of developments.

The SEC's division of risk, strategy, and financial innovation will perform strategic and long-term analysis, identify new developments and trends in financial markets and systemic risk, and make recommendations as to how these new developments and trends affect the commission's regulatory activities.

The division will also conduct research and analysis in furtherance and support of the functions of the SEC and its divisions and offices and provide training on new developments and trends and other matters.

The SEC has hired University of Texas School of Law Professor Henry T. C. Hu as director of the new department. According to the SEC, Hu has expertise in the areas of bank, derivatives, hedge fund, and mutual fund regulation, corporate governance, global competitiveness of U.S. derivatives markets, model risk, risk management, and swaps and other financial innovations.
