N.C. CU Offers Help on Newletters

Local Government Federal Credit Union is making it easy for North Carolina local government staffers to meet their newsletter deadlines.
The credit union has launched a free resource called NewsWorks (www.lgfcunewsworks.org) that provides everything from tips on writing and design to articles and resources on how to overcome obstacles and achieve financial goals.
"In-house newsletters often serve as the primary vehicle for reaching employees with important news and information," said LGFCU President Maurice Smith. "However, in some counties and municipalities, producing an employee newsletter is often a responsibility that falls on a town clerk or someone else who wears several hats within the organization-someone who may have little time and resources for that facet of the job."
Created as a one-stop resource, the NewsWorks site includes coverage of current financial events and question-and-answer articles penned by LGFCU's financial experts. In addition, visitors can find easy-to-use templates, free artwork and photography, tips and links to help with newsletter production.
"We want local governments to know that we don't just want to partner with them when it comes to a financial transaction-and our intent here is not to push credit union products," said Smith. "We want to be a real partner who can help make their jobs easier and their communities and workplaces better."

Consumer Federation Backs Foolproof

The Foolproof financial literacy package produced by the Michigan Credit Union League together with consumer groups picked up an endorsement last week by the Consumer Federation of America.
The financial education program, championed in particular by Atlanta consumer advocate Remar Sutton, is being promoted through state leagues as a peer-to-peer interactive offering aimed at young people and includes hard-hitting message videos.
In backing Foolproof, Stephen Brobeck, executive director of CFA, told reporters in a national teleconference that CUs remain the best sponsors for this type of financial education vehicle because of their nonprofit status and community outreach in reaching youngsters and their parents.
"It is not the complete program," said Brobeck, arguing that while it is a useful tool in addressing the pressing concerns of checking overdrafts and credit delinquencies, it does not get at savings and insurance, two other areas of importance to the federation and its 280 proconsumer affiliate groups.
Foolproof officials said they expect to have a savings module by next January, but an insurance segment will not be included because it is not an area of their expertise.
Brobeck spoke out on the CU link in connection with release of a survey report on parent involvement with youngsters on debt practices produced by Opinion Research Corp., which found that parents feel unconfident about teaching financial education to their children.
