The consumer price index increased .5% last month, the Labor Department reported today. It was the second consecutive monthly increase following three months of declines.

The CPI had risen .3% in January. Consumer prices were .2% higher than in February 2008January 2008.

Excluding food and energy costs, the CPI increased .2% in February, the same rate as in January.

Energy prices rose 3.3% in February, compared with a 1.7% increase in January. Energy prices have fallen 18.5% in the last year.

Transportation prices increased 1.9% in February and fell 11% for the last year.

In January, food and beverage prices fell .1% and have increased 4.7% over the last year.

Housing prices were unchanged for the third consecutive month though rose 1.9% during the last year.

Medical care increased .3% last month and rose 2.8% in the last year. Education and communication prices increased .2% in February and 3.6% during the past 12 months.
