Former President Bill Clinton said recently that in his final conversation with former CUNA spokeswoman Brooke Shearer, they discussed the importance of credit unions.
Clinton, according to an account by Callahan & Associates President Chip Filson, recalled during a memorial service for Shearer that she began the conversation by asking, "How is the economy doing?"
The former president said he gave his general response that the Obama team had made a good start, things were starting to improve. Shearer then interrupted to say: "But this credit union thing is all messed up. We've got to get that fixed."

Shearer, who died of cancer last month, was CUNA's spokesman during the early 1980s and went on to serve in several positions during the Clinton administration and was a longtime friend of the former president and first lady.
She never lost her enthusiasm for credit unions and during the final months of her life sent letters to officials of the Obama transition team and other policymakers about the positive impact credit unions have had in helping people cope with the adversity caused by the current recession.
