WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg today had surgery for pancreatic cancer, the court announced.
Ginsburg, who has been on the court since 1993, had the operation at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The cancer was discovered during a routine medical examination last month.
She was appointed court by President Clinton to succeed Justice Byron White who retired and was the second woman after Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to serve on the court. O'Connor retired in 2006.

Ginsburg has been a member of the court's liberal wing and has generally voted with Justices Stephen Breyer, David Souter and John Paul Stevens.
