WASHINGTON – Consumers bought fewer big-ticket items such as cars, appliances and office equipment last month, the Commerce Department reported today.
Orders for manufactured durable goods fell 2.6% to $176.8 billion, the fifth consecutive monthly decline. In November, those orders fell 3.7%.
Excluding transportation, new orders fell 3.65% and excluding defense, new orders fell 4.9%.

The department said orders for transportation equipment increased .6%, following a 9.8% loss last month.
Shipments of manufactured durable goods fell for the fifth consecutive month. They declined .7%
Inventories of manufactured durable goods-which have been up during 17 of the last 18 months-increased .4% to $343.5 billion.
