Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Germantown, Md., was selected as a workplace excellence award winner by the Alliance for Workplace Excellence for the second year in a row. In order to be considered for the award, Mid-Atlantic had to complete an assessment that was reviewed by an independent review panel of professors, Ph.D. professionals and Ph.D. students of business, industrial and organization psychology and human resources.
HAR-CO Maryland Federal Credit Union, Bel Air, Md., supported the 14th annual Harford County Public Schools teacher of the year awards. HAR-CO provided each of the ten teachers nominated with a $1,200 individual award. Ronald Wooden was selected the winner of the award for his dedication and teaching philosophy.
North Carolina Credit Union League, Greensboro, N.C., announced its statewide award winners. The mark of excellence award was given to Patty Idol, president/CEO Mountain Credit Union, and Clyde Padgett, volunteer at Truliant Federal Credit Union. The Ronald J. Hutchins credit union person of the year awards were given to Maurice Smith, president/CEO of Local Government Federal Credit Union for career person of the year and to John Herrera, chairman of Latino Community Credit Union, for the volunteer person of the year. The Louise Herring philosophy in action award was given to Local Government Federal Credit Union. The Desjardins youth financial education award was given to State Employees' Credit Union and Winston-Salem City Employees' Credit Union. The Dora Maxwell social responsibility award was given to State Employees' Credit Union, Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union, Members Credit Union, Telco Community Credit Union and Greensboro Municipal Credit Union.

Financial Service Centers Cooperative Inc., San Dimas, Calif., announced that Ken Facer, executive vice president of Arrowhead Credit Union in San Bernardino, Calif., was named the 2008 Callahan award winner by Financial Service Centers Cooperative. The award was presented to Facer during his retirement part. Facer was with Arrowhead Credit Union for over 20 years and served as district 15 delegate to the California Credit Union League's assembly of delegates and on the board of governors for the tri-county chapter of the league. He also served on the board of directors for Western Corporate Federal Credit Union and one of its subsidiaries. The Callahan award is given annually to an individual whose dedication to FSCC has helped expand the reach of shared branching. The award is named for Edgar Callahan, past chairman of FSCC, advocate for credit union shared branching and former CEO of Patelco Credit Union.
San Antonio Federal Credit Union, San Antonio, announced the Stephen S. Hennigan, executive vice president, was named the 2008 professional of the year by NAFCU for institutions with greater than $150 million in assets. Hennigan also serves as president of CU Factory Built Lending LP, a subsidiary of SACU.
Nebraska Credit Union League, Omaha, Neb., presented its volunteer distinguished service award to Roy Gieck, director of LincOne Federal Credit Union. Gieck's tenure as the credit union spans three decades. Guick has been an advocate for continuing education for all volunteers and was instrumental in establishing educational requirements for all LincOne volunteers that caused everyone to complete the volunteer achievement course program for their particular area of service. The L.A. Tex Gunzelman professional distinguished service award was given to Ted Bohlen, who recently retired as president/CEO of Western Heritage Credit Union. Bohlen worked at Western Heritage for 19 years before retiring.
Technology Credit Union, San Jose, Calif., announced that its marketing department received a bronze award from the Marketing Association of Credit Unions 2008 Annual Awards competition. Tech CU won the award for its television commercial "Entourage." The commercial was developed to promote Tech CUs business services division that focuses on the needs of small businesses. This was the second year in a row that Tech CUs team won a MAC award for its TV commercials.
Apple Federal Credit Union, Fairfax, Va., partnered with Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Va., to help students prepare for the National Financial Literacy Challenge, a program sponsored by the Office of Financial Education division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Ten students from Stone Bridge High School scored in the top 25th percentile of the literacy challenge test. The Office of Financial Education awarded students Meredith Cliett, Cullen Fleming, Brett Gallahan, Harry Hough, Brett Larson, Hunter Lipski, Mike Pirrello, Margaret Rountree, James White and Andrew Yandziak certificates of merit for their achievements. To prepare for the challenge test, the students worked with Apple FCU's Business Development Manager Dave Gorham and Ashburn Branch Manager Edwin Romas.
