FARMERS BRANCH, Texas — A total of 232 credit union employees have now received grants totaling $111,077 from the Texas Credit Union Foundation's disaster relief fund as the result of Hurricane Ike, foundation officials reported Tuesday.

Ever since the state and national fund raising began after the storm hit Sept. 12, officials have emphasized the urgency in getting funds out to needy employees, a large number who became homeless after their Texas Coast properties were destroyed.

The foundation said so far it has raised $114,425 in contributions from individual Texas CUs, Southwest Corporate FCU and industry groups responding to appeals from CU leaders citing the devastation. Separately, the National Credit Union Administration's online vehicle, CUAid, has raised $60,000.

Meanwhile, the Texas Credit Union League said that only five CUs still remain non-operational out of 188 damaged by the hurricane's wrath. Of that number 128 are considered fully operational with the remainder still reporting closed branches and non-functioning services.
