First City Credit Union, Los Angeles, launched a reality check promotion to raise money for three charities. First City donated $25 for each new checking account opened to the member's choice of one of three causes. The member can choose from Sheriffs' Relief Association Survivors and Dependents Fund, 999 for Kids and Valley Oasis. Members will also have $25 deposited into their new First City checking account courtesy of the credit union.

Belvoir Federal Credit Union, Woodbridge, Va., employees donated more than 300 pounds of food items to Action in Community through Service. The employees collected the food as part of a team building exercise at their quarterly training session. ACTS is a community organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger, homelessness and domestic violence.

Advance Financial Federal Credit Union, Schereville, Ind., participated in a March of Dimes March for Babies event. Advance Financial participants solicited donations and offered collectible plush toys featuring kids club mascot Moe Monkey in the credit union's three offices. The participants raised $1,228 for March of Dimes.

Langley Federal Credit Union, Newport News, Va., matched contributions up to $10,000 in its newly created Tornado Relief Fund. Langley FCU collected monetary donations at all its branches to aid victims impacted by the tornado in the Suffolk community. All contributions were donated to the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Meriwest Credit Union, San Jose, Calif., announced that it partnered with KeyPoint Credit Union, National 1st Credit Union and Common Wealth Central Credit Union to collect women's business clothing and accessories for Career Closet. Career Closet is a volunteer-based organization that provides business attire and other services to local women seeking employment. The four credit unions accepted donations from the public and employees of clothing and accessory items and their San Jose offices. Career Closet puts the donations together with the right person in need of interview of work clothing.

Service 1st Federal Credit Union, Danville, Pa., donated clothes with its old logo on it to Nairobi in Kenya. The Pennsylvania Credit Union Association made an agreement to sponsor a third world country in 2000 and partnered with the Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives and the Association in 2000. As part of the program Service 1st adopted the AFYA SACCO Nairobi, Kenya in 2001. After Service 1st underwent a branch transformation in 2007 employees had closets full of old logo wear that was donated to Nairobi. Three parcels of apparel were sent to the country. The t-shirts arrived in Nairobi after violence and riots took place after the December 2007 election and many people were unable to return to their homes.

Altura Credit Union, Riverside, Calif., upgraded coin counting machines in two of its branches and offered its previously owned machines to small credit unions through the Shapiro Group program of the California Credit Union League. El Futuro Credit Union in Porterville and Ketema Federal Credit Union in El Cajon were the two credit unions that received the machines. The Shapiro Group pools the resources of the credit union community to help smaller credit unions.
