BALTIMORE — MECU of Baltimore is mourning the loss of longtime Board Member Charles L. Benton Jr., who died of pneumonia at the age of 91.
A MECU member for 46 years, Benton joined the MECU Board in December 1962 when he served as budget director for then Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer.
In March 1981, Benton was elected to the position of board chairman and served in that capacity until March 1986. He continued to serve on the board as vice chairman from March 1986 through March 1995, at which time he became an ex-officio member of the board.

In November 2003, he became a director emeritus and continued to serve in that position until his death.
In addition to his years of service to MECU, Benton also helped to found the State Employees Credit Union of Maryland to ensure that state employees could take advantage of credit union membership like the city employees.
