VAUGHN, N.M. — When Wells Fargo left the hamlet of Vaughn, N.M. (population 500), the New Mexico Business Journal reported residents had to drive either 40 miles to Santa Rosa or 100 miles to Albuquerque just to get access to financial services.
But the $13 million Everyone's Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Tucumcari, about 80 miles to the northeast, came to the rescue by opening a new branch in the offices of a local telecommunications cooperative. Now residents just have to cross the street to make deposits or withdrawals or receive other services.
The credit union began in Tucumcari in 1954 as the Southern Pacific Railway Employees Federal Credit Union. The CU changed its name in the late 1990s. Everyone's Federal Credit Union serves more than 4,000 members in Quay, Guadalupe and Union Counties in eastern New Mexico.
