PHOENIX — Arizona replacing Nevada as the fastest growing state has also meant a membership surge for one credit union, the $1.5 billion Arizona Federal Credit Union, which announced over the holidays it enjoyed a 17% membership increase of 32,000 members in 2006.
"We had a meeting last week with the governor, who is projecting 8.9 million more people over the decade and that's our population right now," said Troy Stang, vice president of marketing at the state's second largest CU, which is projecting healthy member growth in 2007.
The member increase was mentioned two weeks ago during a hyped media visit by NCUA Vice Chairman Rodney E. Hood and U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) to promote a year-end $10 million capital payout to members in line with a national campaign to highlight the industry's outreach mission.
