KOHALA COAST, Hawaii — The National Association of Credit Union Chairmen is going on record encouraging more volunteers to seek elected office in trade groups while at the same time obtaining the ballots that traditionally end up on the CEO's desk.
NACUC delegates unanimously adopted a resolution to that effect at the group's annual meeting in Hawaii.
"This was an excellent, very good step in the right direction to get volunteers more active in the political arena to run for state and national office," said David H. Gilbert, a Maryland CU chairman and NAFCU secretary, who has long been a leader in volunteer activism.

The resolution says that for the time NACUC will be in the forefront of backing "those volunteers who wish to seek election." NACUC leadership drafted the resolution.
Speaking before the group, Gilbert, who is chairman of Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union of Aberdeen, Md., distributed guidelines drawn up by NAFCU, which outline how volunteers can run for office and get into committee jobs as an example for NAFCU.
"We asked the volunteers to 'look in the mirror' to determine if they have done all they could to get involved," said Gilbert.
While voting for the proactive resolution, the volunteers in their discussion stressed that while backing their peers, NACUC "would not be paying for campaign costs," said Gilbert. That would be left to individual volunteers.
