OLYMPIA, Wash. – Courtesy of two credit union marketing staffers, Washington State lawmakers were serenaded with a financial literacy message at an unusual hearing last week of a state Senate committee. "We're sure this was one of the most unusual forms of testimony the committee ever had," said Stacy Augustine, senior vice president and general counsel of the Washington Credit Union league who helped arrange the "performance" of the two CU staffers before the Senate Early Learning & Higher Education Committee. Strumming a ukulele with a catchy tune about the importance of financial literacy was Cathy Brorson, marketing specialist at Kitsap FCU, Bremerton, and chairman of the National Youth Involvement Board. She was joined in the sing-along by Dana Pethia, member development specialist at Twin County CU, Olympia. The two "sang their melodic message" of urging the Senate to adopt a bill encouraging school boards to adopt financial literacy integrated within existing curriculum. Augustine said the "reviews were quite good – we all received favorable responses." The musical message even received coverage throughout the capitol carried on TVW, Washington's version of C-SPAN.
