ALEXANDRIA, Va.- NCUA Vice Chair JoAnn Johnson read to students at Jefferson-Houston Elementary School last week as part of an activity for National Financial Literacy Month. "Teaching children at an early age to set goals and to save will pay dividends in their future," Johnson, a former teacher, said. "It is important to teach children what saving one penny, one dollar, can mean for their future. These basic financial concepts can lay a solid foundation for pursuing lifelong goals personally, professionally, and ultimately – their American Dream." She read about basic financial concepts, including setting goals and saving, to the students. State Department Federal Credit Union sponsors the financial literacy initiative, which partners with the school to teach financial basics to 1st and 2nd graders.
