MADISON, Wis. – The $13 million Latino Community Credit Union, based in Durham, N.C., has been named as this year's Outstanding Organization for the National Credit Union Foundation's Herb Wegner award. Each year, the NCUF chooses award winners in the categories of Outstanding Organization, Outstanding Individual and Lifetime Achievement. Last year's Outstanding Organization was a World Council of Credit Union' program for credit union help in the Philippines. "It's tremendously exciting and a generous honor," said John Herrera, co-founder and board member of the institution. "It is even more remarkable when you consider that we founded Latino in June 2000 and so we are not even three years old." The Foundation recognized that the credit union had surpassed its membership projections and added members of whom a majority had no bank account previously. "It is a national model for Latino financial service delivery," the Foundation said.
