EL PASO, Texas-NCUA Board Member JoAnn Johnson delved into El Paso-area credit union efforts of two federal and two state chartered credit unions to serve local underserved areas. The first hand information came from the CEOs of Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union, Government Employees Credit Union of El Paso, West Texas Credit Union, and the Tepeyac Federal Credit Union. "Being able to combine all the information and talent assembled for this conference with the real-life challenges that these El Paso credit unions address in trying to serve this community every day is what NCUA's Colonias Initiative is all about," Johnson remarked. "I want to thank these CEOs for taking the time to personally acquaint me with their experiences, and the credit union participants of this conference for bringing their experiences with them." The conference was held in conjunction with the agency's Access Across America initiative in an effort to aggregate resources for interested credit unions. Johnson opened the third and final day of the conference, which also included speakers from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Fannie Mae and the El Paso Affordable Housing Credit Union Service Organization.
