Despite membership declines, federally-insured credit unionsexperienced continued improvement in almost every category duringthe second quarter of 2017, the NCUA reported Thursday.

The overall growth rate in credit union membership declined 0.1%during the year ending during the second quarter. Membership wasunchanged at the median over the previous year.

However, 75% of the credit unions with declining membership hadassets of $50 million or less.

Some 50.3% of federally-insured credit unions reported havingfewer members at the end of the second quarter of the year. Thehighest growth rate was in Washington State at 2.7%; the lowest wasin Pennsylvania, where membership dropped 1.4%.

Shares and deposits rose in every state over the year ending inthe second quarter. And across the country, 80% offederally-insured credit unions had positive net income during thefirst half of the year, a slight increase from 79% during theperiod last year.

Nationally, the median growth rate in shares and deposits was4.1%, up from 3.3% a year earlier. The growth rate was the highestin Idaho, at 9.8%, while the growth rate was the lowest inWashington, D.C., with 1.1% growth.

At least 57% of the credit unions in every state had positivenet income during the first half of the year, with Nevada leadingthe way with 100%. The lowest was in Washington, D.C. at 57%.

Median asset growth was 3.9% nationally, up from 3.2% a yearbefore. Median asset growth was the fastest in Idaho, at 9.0% andthe lowest in Washington, D.C., at 0.1%,

Nationally, median loan growth in loans outstanding reached 4.4%during the year ending in the second quarter. That compares with a4.3% growth a year ago. The highest median growth rate for loanswas in Nevada, with 13.4%, and the lowest was in New Jersey andConnecticut, with 0.9%.

The median total delinquency rate was 69 basis points at the endof the second quarter, compared with 70 basis points in the secondquarter of 2016. The delinquency rate was the lowest in Oregon,with 32 basis points, and the highest was in New Jersey at 155basis points.
