Despite membership declines, federally-insured credit unions experienced continued improvement in almost every category during the second quarter of 2017, the NCUA reported Thursday.
The overall growth rate in credit union membership declined 0.1% during the year ending during the second quarter. Membership was unchanged at the median over the previous year.
However, 75% of the credit unions with declining membership had assets of $50 million or less.
Some 50.3% of federally-insured credit unions reported having fewer members at the end of the second quarter of the year. The highest growth rate was in Washington State at 2.7%; the lowest was in Pennsylvania, where membership dropped 1.4%.
Shares and deposits rose in every state over the year ending in the second quarter. And across the country, 80% of federally-insured credit unions had positive net income during the first half of the year, a slight increase from 79% during the period last year.
Nationally, the median growth rate in shares and deposits was 4.1%, up from 3.3% a year earlier. The growth rate was the highest in Idaho, at 9.8%, while the growth rate was the lowest in Washington, D.C., with 1.1% growth.
At least 57% of the credit unions in every state had positive net income during the first half of the year, with Nevada leading the way with 100%. The lowest was in Washington, D.C. at 57%.
Median asset growth was 3.9% nationally, up from 3.2% a year before. Median asset growth was the fastest in Idaho, at 9.0% and the lowest in Washington, D.C., at 0.1%,
Nationally, median loan growth in loans outstanding reached 4.4% during the year ending in the second quarter. That compares with a 4.3% growth a year ago. The highest median growth rate for loans was in Nevada, with 13.4%, and the lowest was in New Jersey and Connecticut, with 0.9%.
The median total delinquency rate was 69 basis points at the end of the second quarter, compared with 70 basis points in the second quarter of 2016. The delinquency rate was the lowest in Oregon, with 32 basis points, and the highest was in New Jersey at 155 basis points.
