NCUA board member J. Mark McWatters was appointed by Chairman Rick Metsger to serve as the agency's liaison to the Defense Credit Union Council.
"Since joining (the) NCUA's board, I have advocated that we best serve the variety of interests in the credit union community by working with and listening to them directly," McWatters said. "This will be another chance to hear from those whose job it is to meet the distinct financial needs of their members."
"(The) NCUA can best honor their memories by hiring qualified veterans, educating service members and maintaining strong connections with the credit unions that serve our military men and women at home and abroad," Metsger said.

The Defense Credit Union Council was organized in 1963. It represents the interests of credit unions operating on military installations around the world. The council has more than 200 member credit unions.
At the same time, McWatters awaits confirmation as a member of the Export-Import Bank. Senate Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has said he opposes the concept of the bank and has no intention of considering the nomination in committee.
Senate leaders could bring the nomination directly to the floor. In recent days, Democrats on both sides of Capitol Hill have pushed for the Senate to consider the nomination.
