CU Times was named a finalist for the 2016 Jesse H. Neal Awards in the best news coverage category.
CU Times was recognized for its coverage of lending fraud, check fraud and resulting lawsuits at the $598 million Alabama One Credit Union. What began with simple coverage of check fraud involving credit union member and local businessman Danny Ray Butler spiraled into a complex story of alleged straw loan fraud committed by credit union employees and management, compliance missteps and conspiracy allegations, rising all the way to the Alabama governor's office. In addition to examining compliance issues and industry-wide ramifications, CU Times also shared the human stories of excess, regret, loss and determination.
“We are thrilled to be recognized by the prestigious Neal Awards,” CU Times Executive Editor Heather Anderson said. “We are very proud of our Alabama One coverage. Our entire CU Times team worked together to cover all angles of this intriguing story.”
