Rick MetsgerIn his prepared remarks for the NCUA's January board meeting, Vice Chairman Rick Metsger said the agency should have the capability to live stream meetings in a couple of months.

Metsger said that he inquired about streaming the monthly board meetings live to the public when he joined the board more than a year ago.

“I was informed that while we do post videos on our web site after a meeting is over there were technical challenges to live streaming but that the agency was looking into that option,” Metsger wrote in his prepared remarks, which his office provided to CU Times.

Metsger said he asked for a status report on the project after last month's board meeting and added wanted streaming available in time for the release of the revised risk-based capital rule.

“While staff has started testing live streaming, I regret it is not yet available,” Metsger wrote. ”Staff believes it will be another couple of months before we have the equipment and technology to do live streaming, especially with the closed captioning we are required to provide to comply with our commitment to meet the needs of people with disabilities.

Video cameras were allowed in the NCUA board room during the Jan. 15 meeting for the first time ever.

“While I doubt we will win any Emmys, I do believe this will be a service to the public,” said Metsger, a former television reporter.
