Stephen Pleger, the senior deputy commissioner for the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance, started his new role Monday as NASCUS board chair.

Pleger succeeds former NASCUS Board Chair Mike Wettrich.

“Steve has been an integral part of NASCUS and the NASCUS Board, and we are excited about the future of NASCUS with him at the organization's helm,” said NASCUS President/CEO Mary Martha Fortney.

Pleger was appointed to deputy commissioner for Georgia DBF on May 1, 2010. His role included oversight of the department, development of policies and regulations and liaison to the governor and other agencies.

Pleger will preside over NASCUS' annual meeting Sept. 10 and activities during the association's State System Summit in Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 10-12.

Wettrich had been a NASCUS board member since 2011.

He will become president/CEO of the $87 million Education First Credit Union in Westerville, Ohio, Aug. 25 after serving as chief examiner and interim deputy superintendent for credit unions at the Ohio Division of Financial Institutions.

“As a long-time active member of NASCUS and most recently board chair, Mike has brought so much to the association,” Fortney said. “We appreciate his service to the state system and to NASCUS and look forward to continuing our relationship with him as a state credit union CEO.”
