Drivers who recently pulled into a local gas station were surprised to find out that their fuel was paid for by Merrimack Valley Credit Union.

The $496 million cooperative in North Andover, Mass., said it gave away more than $6,000 in free gas to 144 drivers Jan. 31 at Haffner's Gas Station.

Staff from the credit union, including President/CEO Peter Matthews, pumped gas for nearly two hours during the morning commute, according to Merrimack Valley.

The giveaway ended around 8:30 a.m. when local traffic was affected by lines at the gas station, the credit union said.

“We were so pleased at the overwhelming response. We made a lot of people happy today and in doing so supported a local business and created some awareness of our credit union,” Matthews said. “We can't wait to do this again.”

Merrimack Valley serves more than 44,000 members.
