On Wednesday and Thursday, credit unions and community banks will team up nationwide to win back market share from the larger banks by offering free gas and sharing how their products and services can help meet a consumer's financial needs.
Through the "Take Back Your Banking" campaign, more than $150,000 in gas will be given away to consumers in nearly 40 cities to showcase local financial providers, according to Kasasa, a checking account rewards brand created by Austin, Texas-based BancVue, which is hosting the national event.
Employees from each local community bank or credit union will be manning the event by personally pumping free gas for event attendees in each market and talking to consumers about how they can make better banking choices, said Kasasa.

In partnership with Kasasa.com, the financial institutions will showcase the products and services they offer including free reward checking, "superior customer service" and nationwide ATM fee refunds with no minimum balance requirements to earn the rewards or maintain the accounts, according to the company.
This is the second year Kasasa said it has hosted the national event.
"Over the past few years, too-big-to-fail megabanks have issued new fees, are widely considered to be the cause of the Great Recession and have jeopardized hard earned deposits on risky investments," Kasasa said, adding the national event aims to "raise awareness around how (credit unions and community banks) fuel local economies and encourage people to consider taking back their banking from the megabanks."
