Over the past few years, credit unions and finance companies have become increasingly important as suppliers of credit to small businesses.

That's one of the findings from the Small Business Lending in the United States, 2012 report from the SBA's Office of Advocacy.

Looking at last year's trends, the agency said although the banking industry has undergone major consolidation, the market for small business loans tends to be local in nature.
