With the arrival of hurricane season each year, credit unions know they need to pay more attention to preparing for disasters, particularly to protect members' account records and related information.
I commend the Louisiana League for launching a radio program promoting the role shared branching can play during periods of high storm activity. ("Louisiana League Message: Hurricane Season and Shared Branching," Credit Union Times, May 31). It's a well-timed, precautionary reminder, but it shouldn't stop there.
When destructive weather occurs, credit unions' role as a helpful, caring partner takes on a greater significance. As trusted financial partners, credit unions should consider being members' resource for safeguarding their critical documents, deeds and other personal files. Knowing their important papers are securely stored online – and are easily accessible – can be invaluable when the physical documents are destroyed, lost or compromised in the aftermath of a physical disaster.

At its core, a secure online storage program for documents is about helping members while earning their loyalty and appreciation. It can be easily implemented at a very low annual cost – far below any advertising campaign budget – and it helps ensure a credit union's place as the member's go to financial institution during good times and bad.
Given the growing amount of digital data we create and rely on each day – and how vulnerable we feel when its inaccessible – providing online storage for important papers should be top of mind for all credit unions. n
