ARLINGTON, Va. —Navy Federal Credit Union used today to saythank you. At all of its branches that are open, it provided freecookies and/or cake to celebrate Member Appreciation Day.

The Vienna, Va.-based credit union, which has assets of $47billion, didn't tie any of its advertising to Bank Transfer Day but has said its new accounts are up over last year.

Abigail Ibay, the assistant manager of the credit union's branchon North Randolph Street here, said in the last few weeks they havehad more people coming in to open new accounts. The foot traffictoday has been brisk, the way it usually it is on Saturdays, shesaid.

Ibay added that people who make the move don't always say whythey are switching financial institutions but they “want to learnabout becoming a member of us and they like what they hear.''
