Citigroup has announced that hackers breached its computer defenses and accessed some data from tens of thousands of its card holders.

The breach is relatively rare in that it happened at a financial institution card issuer and did not occur as a the result of a breach at a retailer.

The bank's 2010 Annual Report indicates that it has 21 million card accounts in the U.S.

The bank has acknowledged that hackers were able to see customer names, account numbers and email addresses but were not able to see card expiration dates, security codes, social security numbers or card holder birth dates as that data is stored elsewhere.

The hackers appeared to have succeeded in breaking in through the bank's online cardholder access, but the bank has not revealed any additional details about how hackers breached its defenses.

The bank said the breached records represent roughly 1% of its accounts in the U.S. and that it would contact card holders whose card data had been accessed.
