Rep. Barney Frank, the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, will speak at CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference, the group announced today.

Frank (D-Mass.), who was chairman of the panel for four years until the Democrats lost their majority in the House, is known for his effectiveness as a lawmaker and for his razor-sharp wit. He was one of the main authors of the financial regulatory overhaul bill that Congress passed last year and during hearings he came across as part Harvard professor and part stand-up comic.

Freshman Sen. Roy Blount (R-Mo.) will also speak at the conference, as will Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), a key member of the Senate Banking Committee.

CUNA's political action committee spent $152,000 on an independent expenditure to make radio ads on behalf of Blunt, who was competing for an open seat.

Rep. Steven Stivers (R-Ohio), on whose behalf CUNA's PAC did a partisan communication, is also slated to speak.

Television actor John Schneider, who cofounded the Children's Miracle Network, is also slated to speak at the conference, which will be held from Feb. 27-March 2.
