CUNA's and NAFCU's political action committees spread their financial largesse generously this campaign cycle, though they have been raising and spending less than they did two years ago, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
From Jan. 1, 2009 through Nov. 22, 2010, CUNA's PAC made $3.8 million in contributions to campaigns and committees and in independent expenditures. It had $184,365 left in its coffers.
During the same period in the 2008 cycle, the PAC made $4.3 million in contributions.
The Credit Union Legislative Action Council has raised $3.5 million during this year's cycle. During the same period in the 2008 cycle it raised $3.8 million.
During this cycle, among approximately 6,000 political action committees, CUNA was the 18th most generous giver to federal candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. It contributed $1.8 million to federal candidates, 57% to Democrats and 43% to Republicans.
NAFCU's PAC made $322,939 in contributions to federal candidates and committees from Jan. 1, 2009 through Nov. 22, 2010. During the same period in the 2008 cycle, the PAC made $412,331 worth of those contributions. As of Nov. 22, it had $180,376 left in its coffers.
The PAC has raised $350,830 this cycle. During the same period in the 2008 cycle it raised $369,418.
During this cycle, NAFCU's PAC-the National Association of Federal Credit Unions Political Action Committee-made $172,961 in contributions to federal candidates, 61% to Democrats and 36% to Republicans.
Both PACs are likely to give more money before the end of the year as officials of both organizations say they are being inundated with requests from lawmakers for help in retiring their campaign debts.
