Alliant Credit Union, Chicago, participated in the 2010 Plane Pull to benefit Special Olympics Illinois, held at O'Hare International Airport. The "Alliant Advantage" team was one of nearly 30 teams from Chicago area public safety, service and business communities who pulled a 99-ton UPS airbus aircraft 20 feet in a tug-of-war style event. Alliant Credit Union Foundation donated money to Special Olympics on behalf of the credit union's employee volunteers by paying their $50 Plane Pull registration fees, totaling $1,000. Additionally, pledges were made by friends and family of several team members, according to Alliant Advantage team captain Angelica Garcia.
America First Credit Union, La Habra, Calif., organized a book and magazine drive for La Habra High School. Credit union employees collected more than 550 books and magazines over the summer and recently donated them to the school. The periodicals will be used to help promote the school's goal of having every student read a minimum of 20 minutes per day. This is the second year the credit union has organized a book drive for La Habra High School. Last year 150 periodicals were donated.
Andrews Federal Credit Union, Suitland, Md., donated $500 to Operation Warm Heart, a program run by the First Sergeants Council at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Operation Warm Heart is a year-round program that provides airmen and their families with financial assistance to overcome various hardships. The program is supported by volunteers and sponsors, and funds donated are used to provide food baskets, commissary checks, gift cards and other items.

Dow Chemical Employees' Credit Union, Midland, Mich., raised $355 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. For the one-day fundraiser in September, participating DCECU employees each donated money in exchange for the privilege of wearing blue jeans and tennis shoes to work that day. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society works to improve the quality of life of patients and their families and seeks to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma.
Indiana Members Credit Union, Indianapolis, supported National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by designating Oct. 27, 2010 breast cancer awareness day for its employees. IMCU's CEO, Ron Collier, promised that $10 would be donated for every employee who showed support for the cause by wearing pink to work on this day. As a result, 247 employees rose to the challenge and IMCU is now donating $2,470 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
JSC Federal Credit Union, Houston, reached out to the new teachers in the surrounding school districts, offering them a chance to win a $500 classroom makeover with their membership. Flyers were distributed at all of the new teacher luncheons that were held in each of the six surrounding school districts and private schools. Each winner went shopping with a JSC FCU business development coordinator to spend the $500 for their classrooms.
NEFCU, Westbury, N.Y., surpassed its fundraising goal to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association's 2010 summer camp program in Spring Valley, N.Y. The credit union's staff members raised $11,635, exceeding the $10,000 they originally aimed to collect and donate. This money provided sponsorships for several local children to attend the camp. NEFCU also provided numerous boxes of school supplies to the Interfaith Nutrition Network in an effort to help children of underprivileged families across Long Island. NEFCU's Community Involvement Committee led the effort of collecting donated school supplies of all types at the credit union's branches throughout August.
Rivermark Community Credit Union, Beaverton, Ore., has partnered with the Doernbecher Foundation and Safeway's Clackamas Bread Plant to sell cookie dough for charity. It is the 27th year of the annual tradition, and all the proceeds will benefit the Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, Ore. Orders for sugar cookie dough and chocolate chip cookie dough can be placed online or at any branch location. Last year's event raised more than $50,000 for the charity.
St. Helens Federal Community Credit Union, St. Helens, Ore., participated in the Windermere Foundation Masquerade Ball fundraiser. Diana Huff, assistant vice president of marketing, auctioned off 10 inches of her hair for Locks of Love and donated the winning bid of $100 to the Windermere Foundation. The event included dinner and a silent auction followed by a costume contest, a live auction, a raffle drawing and a performance by a local band. Over 200 people attended the event, which brought in approximately $13,400 for local children and low-income families.
Vantage Credit Union, St. Louis, raised $4,000 for prostate and breast cancer awareness. The credit union held a blue dress down day and bake sale on Sept. 9 for prostate cancer awareness and a pink dress down day and charity auction on Oct. 22 for breast cancer awareness. A check for $2,000 was presented to The Empowerment Network by Vantage CEO Hubert Hoosman, for whom prostate cancer awareness is an important cause. He challenged the St. Louis Chapter of Credit Unions to get involved. Another check for $2,000 was presented to the Komen Foundation.
