Belvoir Federal Credit Union, Woodbridge, Va., catered a smorgasbord of Thanksgiving dishes to 15 soldiers who were unable to take leave during the holiday season due to their meticulous training on Fort Belvoir. The CEO of Belvoir Federal, Patricia Kimmel, and the Director of Branch Operations, Judy MacDonald, arranged the event after discovering at a meeting a week prior to Thanksgiving that these young men and women would be unable to go home for the holidays.
Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, Groton, Conn., donated hundreds of turkeys and canned goods to local food banks this Thanksgiving. The Second Annual Turkey Donation, made possible by the credit union's community giving and community outreach programs, provided $3,000 worth of turkeys in honor of former Charter Oak CEO Larry Hertell. In addition to delivering close to 250 turkeys the week before Thanksgiving, the Credit Union worked hard to increase this year's bounty by holding drives for nonperishable food items like cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, gravy and stuffing. Both members and the public were encouraged to show their thanks this holiday season by donating at any Charter Oak branch. Canned goods were distributed to various food banks throughout eastern Connecticut.
The Credit Union of Atlanta, Atlanta, presented a $5,000 donation on Thanksgiving morning to Elisabeth Williams-Omilami, daughter of the late Dr. Hosea Williams and CEO of the Hosea Feed the Hungry organization. Employees of the credit union also joined in the volunteer efforts to serve over 20,000 people at the annual Thanksgiving dinner at Turner Field.

Fall River Municipal Credit Union, Fall River, Mass., held a food drive last month to collect nonperishable items for a local food pantry. Both employees and members took part, with participating employees winning the opportunity to wear jeans for the day. The credit union has now begun a toy drive to benefit a local charity.
FocalPoint Credit Union, Chittenango, N.Y., organized a friendly but spirited "penny wars" fundraising competition between classrooms in several local schools that sponsor credit union membership. Chittenango-area students responded to the challenge by raising $2,572 for the Sullivan Food Cupboard, including more than 100,000 pennies. Vicki Voutsinas, branch manager of the credit union's Chittenango branch, along with representatives from Chittenango High School, dropped off the check to the charity just in time for Thanksgiving.
Genisys Credit Union, Auburn Hills, Mich., helped pack 300 food boxes at the Baldwin Center on Nov. 22 so that needy families in the area could have a Thanksgiving dinner. The credit union not only provided manpower for the event, but also gave a monetary donation for food to be purchased. Genisys has been involved with packing holiday boxes at the Baldwin Center for around 17 years.
Los Angeles Federal Credit Union, Los Angeles, donated 100 canned goods to The Midnight Mission in downtown Los Angeles, a social service agency that annually serves a Thanksgiving meal to over 3,000 people. The canned goods were collected by members and employees at LAFCU's El Monte Branch during its free community shred day in October.
Additionally, 23 LAFCU employees recently volunteered to assemble food packages at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank near downtown LA. In conjunction with volunteers from AT&T and L.A. Works, LAFCU employees assembled over 3,200 packages on Saturday, Nov. 20. The packages contained a nutritious blend of canned fruit and vegetables, pasta, cereal, apple juice, peanut butter and other nonperishables that will be distributed to needy seniors throughout L.A. County. Along with assembling food kits, LAFCU President/CEO John Dea presented Foodbank CEO Michael Flood with a $1,000 check, which will be used to fund hunger relief in L.A. County.
membersTrust Credit Union, Virginia Beach, Va., launched its "7 cities, 7 families" program this holiday season. The credit union sponsored seven families from the seven cities in its field of membership. On Nov. 20, Thanksgiving food baskets were delivered to one family in each city: Hampton, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth. The food for the baskets was collected at three local branches. The credit union has also been collecting additional nonperishable food items to support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula.
