The 149,000 members of UW Credit Union can now manage their accounts, and avoid potential overdraft charges, through SMS text messages available on nearly any mobile phone.

The new service includes balance checking and transfers between accounts, as well as the $1.2 billion credit union's Money Link person-to-person service.

"We've created this system so members can manage their accounts effectively, wherever they go, even if they don't have Web access," said Eric Bangerter, director of Internet services at UWCU. "For instance, in the past, if a member received an automatic low balance alert via text message, they had to log in to Web Branch, either at a computer or with their Web-enabled mobile device with mobile banking."
