Diamond Credit Union, Pottstown, Pa., has reported raising $58,000 for American Cancer Society Relay for Life in 2010, making its total contribution to the charity over the past five years more than $250,000. This year, with the support of the entire staff, Diamond hosted a number of fundraising events including a "beef and beer," a Philadelphia Eagles basketball challenge, a charity golf invitational, jeans days and "Longaberger basket bingo."

Meriwest Credit Union, San Jose, Calif., recently collected and delivered school supplies to Family Giving Tree's back to school supply drive program for underprivileged youth. This is an organization the credit union supports every year for its back to school backpack program and its holiday gift program.

SELCO Community Credit Union, Eugene, Ore., raised $3,125 this year for American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, surpassing its goal of $2,500 and more than doubling last year's fundraising efforts. Over 100 SELCO employees participated, and 26 volunteered to take at least a one-hour walking shift to support those who have survived cancer. Several brought their children, spouses and loved ones. Many had their own personal connection to someone who had lost their life to cancer or survived thanks to efforts like this.

Shell Federal Credit Union, Deer Park, Texas, announced the success of its recent "Supplies for Students" fundraiser, which was held to raise money to cover the costs of school packs for students in need from local school districts. Branches competed to see who could raise the most money, bringing in baked goods to sell, raffling off cakes, brownies and car washes, holding a silent auction, and on the last day, emptying the change in their pockets. To date, Shell's furthering community unity team has raised $9,071 and donated 1,120 hours in volunteer service in the community.

St. Anne's Credit Union, Fall River, Mass., held its seventh annual "Get Steppin'" 5K walk-a-thon to benefit Steppingstones Inc. All funds raised were donated to the First Step Inn, an emergency shelter for the homeless, which is open year round. Donations will be used by the inn to supply healthy meals and support services to the homeless in the community. A team of eight walkers participated in the event, which took place on Aug. 21, 2010.

Tampa Chapter of Credit Unions, Tampa, Fla., presented checks during its annual volunteer appreciation night to eight charities that benefit children in the Greater Tampa Bay area. The event theme of "An Evening With The Stars" was held at Busch Gardens, Gwazi Pavilion. This event served as a thank you to credit union volunteer board members and credit union employees who volunteer their time throughout the year holding various fundraising and community involvement events. Representatives from each of the eight charities received a total of more than $60,000, presented to them by the CEOs and board members of local credit unions. The funds pre-sented were raised during the chapter's sixth annual "Cruise for Kids Motorcycle Poker Run," the Tampa chapter's signature fundraising event, which doubled from last year.

The Richard Myles Johnson Foundation and CUNA Mutual raised more than $30,000 last month during a golf tournament for the state foundation for credit unions in California and Nevada. The event drew 80 players and 14 sponsors. Madison, Wis.-based CUNA Mutual served as title sponsor. The tournament's winning group was Jim Plotkin from the Plotkin Group; Penny Sandilfer of Pacific Marine Credit Union; and Steve VanSickler of Visterra Credit Union.
