An old face gets a new look in Southwest Corporate Federal Credit Union's new education effort aimed at helping credit unions tighten their computer security defenses.
A recent webinar is one feature of the effort and another is customizable posters free for the asking.
The 1,500-member Texas corporate is drawing on the image of founding father Benjamin Franklin and the wit and wisdom of its own information technology staff to provide such "Benny-isms" as "If something looks fishy, someone's probably phishing" and "Keen on your guard, or computing becomes hard."

The webinar, open to all credit unions, was geared toward IT security, audit and compliance staff and is being presented by Southwest Corporate security partner Digital Defense Inc.
"Our goal is to encourage every member credit union to participate in a no-cost training program designed to boost awareness of security threats and challenges," said Jerry Delezen, Southwest Corporate's senior vice president of information technology. "A few simple implementations may lower the risk of a very expensive nightmare."
Titled "Securing Your Credit Union's Workstations", the webinar was led by Digital Defense Chief Compliance Officer Tom DeSot and covered such topics as preventing breaches by managing administrative rights; blocking malware, spyware and viruses; maximizing protection through firewalls; and establishing a process for effective operating system and software patch management.
"This webinar is built around the NCUA's security expectations," Delezen said, "but it's really a review of best practices that everyone should be using."
Credit unions can select from a list of Benny-isms to create customizable posters to hang in their offices. To view and download the posters go to www.swcorp.org.
