Bay Federal Credit Union, Capitola, Calif., employees were honored at a recent United Way of Santa Cruz County awards ceremony for fundraising at local businesses. At the ceremony, employees received a silver award for helping raise a total of $8,048 for 30 health and human service programs throughout Santa Cruz County. The credit union, which has supported the local United Way with fundraising campaigns for more than 15 years, has contributed funding through one-time donations, payroll deductions and other employee campaigns, including an office rummage sale. According to Carrie Birkhofer, president/CEO of Bay Federal, who accepted the award, the funding will help Santa Cruz residents partake in United Way service programs despite budget cutbacks.
Redwood Credit Union, Santa Rosa, Calif., employees participated in two Big Brothers/Big Sisters' events, raising more than $10,000 toward Sonoma County and Marin County mentoring programs. More than 100 Redwood Credit Union employees participated in the Rohnert Park and San Rafael "Bowl for Kids' Sake" events. Redwood Credit Union is currently celebrating 60 years of service to consumers and small business owners throughout the North Bay and San Francisco areas.
Credit Unions for Kids and CUSOs, Dana Point, Calif., partnered to rack up record-breaking revenue for 11 Children's Miracle Network hospitals in California and Nevada. The funds reached $200,000 and were collected by means of a wine auction attended by 230 people from 80 credit unions, hospitals and other organizations. Also in attendance was Eileen Garrido, 10-year-old daughter of Betty Garrido and Carlos Garrido, executive vice president/chief operating officer of Schools Federal Credit Union. Through the help of credit union donations, Eileen was able to recover from a serious heart condition after two surgeries at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. At the event, Eileen sang two songs from her CD to the audience?a performance she replicated on several occasions to raise money for the hospital that saved her life. Today, credit unions support 170 children's hospitals throughout the country. The Credit Union for Kids program has raised more than $70 million since 1996.

First Credit Union, Chandler, Ariz., teamed up with the Arizona Rattlers football team by sponsoring the squad's "Kick-to-Win" promotion, an event in which a fan is given the opportunity to win $25,000 by kicking a 25-yard field goal. Fans can sign up for the contest at the First Credit booth at the eight Rattlers' home games during the 2010 season.
HarborOne Credit Union, Brockton, Mass., donated $5,000 to Continued Hours at Mansfield Public Schools, a summer camp program that regularly serves 1,800 kids from the Mansfield community. The donation marked the renewal of the credit union's sponsorship of the program and was part of HarborOne's Savings Makes Sense financial literacy program. The credit union also helped the local Boys & Girls Club to meet its goal for operating costs through a $10,000 donation. The funding also went toward supporting the George W. Baldwin Educational Enhancement Fund to help the club's young aspiring college students achieve their goals. The Hocomock area YMCA also received a $2,000 donation from the credit union towards the renovation and expansion of a Foxboro facility.
Financial Center, Indianapolis, raised $26,238 for the American Red Cross to contribute to earthquake relief in Haiti. The funding will support Red Cross efforts to provide shelter for victims of the disaster as well as aid the progress of water purification and improvement of sewage systems. Financial Center fronted the initial $5,000 in addition to matching the first $2,500 collected through member donations. Much of the remaining funds were donated by school leadership activities groups from Arsenal Tech and Shortridge High School. Financial Center electronic donation and networking sites also included information that educated donators on fraudulent relief funds in order to safeguard members' money.
