An intense 30-day competition among Northern Virginia schools helped students, educators and staff across five counties save a record-breaking $292,350 during Apple Federal Credit Union's "Feed the Pig" savings competition.
This year's bragging rights go to Manassas, Va.-based Stonewall Jackson High School for saving $60,216 in deposits. Apple FCU liaison Terri Carson was recently recognized by key members of President Barack Obama's administration for excellence in financial education.
"Feed the Pig" is part of a national campaign sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Advertising Council designed to improve financial literacy and economic awareness among high school students. Apple FCU's sponsorship included financial education workshops, as well as marketing and promotion guidance, for all participating schools.

Over the past three years the Fairfax, Va.-based credit union has expanded the contest's scope from two schools to opening it up to all 34 student-run credit unions.
